I know what it’s like to be so sleep deprived you wonder if you are OK to be caring for a baby or driving a vehicle. That was the state I was in at the beginning of my amazing son’s life. 3 hours in a row was considered a great night for us. Most nights, he was up every 1-2 hours. As my lack of sleep starting compounding I found myself suffering from symptoms of postpartum depression from sleep deprivation. We started doing what ever it took to get my son to sleep and for the first time in my life, I started drinking coffee. Strong.Black.Coffee.
We had been given plenty of advice and read a handful of books, it all seemed to contradict it's self and I was more confused and tired than ever. One thing all the advice and books had in common, was information but lacked the much needed support we required to get through this. A good friend suggested the help of a sleep consultant and after our first discussion we quickly started to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Once our son started sleeping through the night, and his naps started to lengthen, we started sleeping, we started to function better, and we were healthier and happier. It was life changing.
This experience led me to want to help other sleep deprived parents. I had left my 15 year career as a Corporate Learning and Development professional to be a full-time parent, but my desire to teach and help others was still strong. I truly believe that it takes a village to raise a child. As a Paediatric Sleep Consultant I have the opportunity to be a member of a community of post partum support practitioners and a part of many other parent’s 'village' supporting them teach their children the skills needed to have healthy sleep habits.
